How MeshGate Works

Understand how MeshGate evaluates spatial reliability and helps you decide whether a 3D model is suitable for its intended use.

What Is MeshGate?

MeshGate is a platform in development for spatial validation, comparison and correction of 3D models.

It provides a verification step between a completed reconstruction and the decisions based on it. The goal is to help teams understand where a model supports measurement, where discrepancies require investigation and where evidence is insufficient.

The underlying technology is the subject of a provisional patent application filed through UC Berkeley. A UC Berkeley invention disclosure has also been filed.

What Is a GIS Solution Space?

In MeshGate, a GIS Solution Space is the collection of geospatial references and spatial constraints used to assess or guide a reconstruction.

These may include survey control, independent checkpoints, LiDAR data, terrain models and relevant design information. Together, they provide a framework for evaluating the model’s location, scale, elevation and geometry.

Each reference must be appropriate for the task. Its accuracy, coverage and capture date matter. Survey observations describe the measured site, while BIM and design surfaces describe intended conditions; these roles remain distinct.

How Does Validation Work?

The process begins with the intended use of the model: what needs to be measured, compared or assessed.

MeshGate checks whether the model and reference data are compatible, then evaluates spatial agreement and coverage. The assessment looks for issues such as shifts, tilt, elevation differences and missing areas.

Results help distinguish supported measurements from areas requiring review or additional evidence. A successful check applies to the assessed area, available references and agreed tolerances.

If a model fails a check, the next step may be correction, reprocessing or additional data collection.

How Does AI Support Reconstruction?

AI is being developed as part of MeshGate’s reconstruction and correction workflow, guided by geospatial evidence and spatial constraints.

The aim is to help identify and address reconstruction problems while keeping the result connected to real-world position, scale and geometry.

Proposed corrections must be checked against suitable reference data. Areas inferred or reconstructed with limited evidence must remain distinguishable from areas supported by measurements.

What Do Results Show?

MeshGate’s assessments are designed to show where a model agrees with its references, where discrepancies occur and where the available evidence is insufficient.

Depending on the workflow and pilot scope, results may include:

The validation framework uses three decisions:

Missing data remains explicitly identified and is not interpreted as zero change.
